Publication’s Staffs Lose Charm in Regional; First Magazine Reaps Awards

It was a grief-stricken day and the news surely didn’t bring bliss for the staffs of CEFizen’s Gazette as they fall short to surpass or at least parallel last year’s number of individual awards in the Regional Higher Education Press Conference last December 9-11, 2007 at the Angel’s Hills Retreat House and Formation Center in Tagaytay City. From the six participants, composed of three previous winners and three neophytes, only a couple of them received awards. They are Rosalina Escobin who bagged 7th place in the News Writing Filipino category and Alvin Ursua who ranked 9th in the Poetry Filipino division. It was Ursua’s first time to join in the much-awaited journalism competition. But there was a glimpse of hope for the staff as the name of their first ever magazine, the Cougar, was repeatedly called on stage to received its awards. The Cougar bagged the following three honors in the press conference: 10th place both in Feature/Literary and DevCom categories and 7th for its Opinion Page. The staffs were so proud of this accomplishment given the fact that it was their first magazine and they intend to do much better next school year. The Cougar magazine is still qualified to join in the Luzonwide Higher Education Press Conference in Cagayan come February 2008.
